O Sapientia

It's time once again to pray the Great O Antiphons. The antiphons are prayed before the Magnificat during vespers in the Octave before Christmas (Dec. 17-23). Christmas Eve is the eighth day of the Octave.

Each antiphon highlights a Scriptural title for the Messiah, and each refers to a prophecy of Isaiah of the coming of the Messiah.

O Sapientia (O Wisdom)
O Adonai (O Lord)
O Radix Jesse (Root of Jesse)
O Clavis David (Key of David)
O Oriens (Day-Spring or Radiant Dawn)
O Rex Gentium (King of the Gentiles)
O Emmanuel (Our King and Lawgiver)

For today, December 17:

O Sapientia, quae ex ore Altissimi prodiisti, attingens a fine usque ad finem, fortiter sauviterque disponens omnia: veni ad docentdum nos viam prudentiae.

O Wisdom, which camest out of the mouth of the Most High, reaching from end to end and ordering all things mightily and sweetly: come and teach us the way of prudence. Amen
